Chapter Seven

Mario had a hard time getting enough shut-eye. He couldn’t stop dreaming about Kendis. Never in his wildest dreams did he think the women the world had chosen for him would be so sweet. The only sour note was that Jeremiah was being a stubborn ass. Mario totally got that Panther Cove was everything to his friend. Hell, Hunter and Derek had treated him like their own and had given him the opportunity to get well trained, but there should come a time in a man’s life when he had to learn where his priorities lay. Mario believed he could do his job well and have time to spend with Kendis.

He rolled out of bed and glanced at the clock. He had a half hour before he had to be in the gym working out. In need of food, he trudged to the kitchen.

As he passed Jeremiah’s closed door he listened to see if his friend was awake. Though the shower wasn’t running, he doubted Jeremiah was still asleep. When Mario had gone to bed, Jeremiah had yet to come home. At first he thought he might have been on stakeout, but Hercules had texted him to say he and Casius were on duty. He could have tried to contact Jeremiah, but in the last couple of days, his friend had been acting weird.

Mario decided to put breakfast on the table before rousing him. Since Mario was dead tired, he decided to fry eggs, bacon, and cook toast instead of making something more substantial. For Jeremiah, he poured water into the coffeemaker and turned it on, and for himself, he boiled water for tea. While he waited for the food to cook, he thought about The Sword’s recent unrest. His biggest worry was Kendis. They’d already targeted Jennifer. He wasn’t convinced that once she married Hunter and Derek that she’d be free to roam around. Brief thoughts of leaving the compound entered his brain, but not being by his best friend’s side concerned him.

He flipped the eggs and pulled the bread out of the toaster. After he fixed two plates and poured Jeremiah’s coffee, he went in search of his friend. If Jeremiah wasn’t careful, he’d miss the workout.

Mario knocked on his door. “Jeremiah?”

When there was no answer, he pushed open the door. His bed was made and the bathroom door open. If Hunter had contacted him about a breach, Jeremiah would have been woken him up. Needing sustenance, he went back to the kitchen and gobbled down his food. He covered Jeremiah’s breakfast, and placed it in the refrigerator. The coffee would have to go to waste.

Once he changed into his workout gear, he headed to the gym. He wouldn’t put it past his friend to have gotten up early to workout. The inside lights were all ablaze. When he walked in, he expected to see Jeremiah on the weight bench. Instead, he was locked in a hold with Hercules. So that was where he was.

Casius, Derek, and several others were standing around cheering them on.
